Technologies for Embedded Computing (TEC) Centre

Research Opportunities

Cork Institute of Technology, Ireland is commencing an ambitious
expansion of its Applied Research Programme through the establishment
of a Centre of Excellence in Embedded Computing. The TEC Centre,
supported by major research funding from Enterprise Ireland, will
build significant research activities to support the growth of
regional industry, including the creation of new enterprise, based
directly upon the development of its research and development
Programme.

The TEC Centre is currently seeking a highly motivated, resourceful
people for the following research and development position within the
TEC Centre. A successful candidate will become part of an ambitious
team seeking to implement high impact applied research, development
and exploitation programmes in collaboration with regional industry.

Postgraduate Masters Position

Project: Improving Energy Performance of Buildings using Distributed
Communication and Advanced Control

The objective of this project is to investigate how the application of
wireless sensor network-based energy monitoring, data management and
optimal distributed control technology, can improve the energy
performance of buildings and how the increased awareness of energy
consumption can lead to savings through shifts in usage behaviour. The
main outcome of this research will be the specification, analysis and
implementation of efficient energy consumption modelling and
optimisation algorithms for effective monitoring and control of
(electrical) energy in buildings.

Profile of a Candidate: A suitable graduate for this project is
expected to have a good honours degree in electronic, computer
engineering or equivalent at upper second class or first class level.
Knowledge of control systems design and in particular optimisation
theory and algorithms is essential. Experience with computer
programming in C/C+ is also essential. Knowledge of wireless
communications and in particular wireless sensor networks would be a
distinct advantage.

Scholarship Details: A successful candidate will be registered for a
Masters degree by research and paid a grant of €15,000 per annum for
up to 24 months.
