Applications are invited from prospective students interested in
understanding the mechanical function of biological materials at the
nanoscale. These studentships are fully funded and supported by the
EPSRC. The start date is flexible.

The research will focus on the mechanical behaviour of mineralized
tissues with particular emphasis on the use of new experimental
methods to measure physical properties at length scales approaching
nanometres. Potential students should be highly motivated and ideally
have a degree in applied physical sciences, although a background in
biological sciences will also be considered. Familiarity with the
structure of mineralized tissue is an advantage. Funding is available
for UK/EU students with a minimum 2.1 degree although other nationals
will be considered provided academic excellence can be demonstrated.

The research students will be supervised by Dr Asa H. Barber and use
the facilities within the newly constructed imaging centre at Queen
Mary. This centre has been created using extensive investment of over
£3million to provide state-of-the-art electron and scanning probe
microscopy for soft material studies. More information on the Barber
