I will not answer questions directed to my email
on this topic.
To clarify things, I am not a school administrator,
I am not an admission councilor. Even worse, I am
not trying to make money out of you. I only know
about undergraduate scholarships at these three
schools mentioned (MIT, Yale, Harvard).
My intention was to show that in some cases (even the
top-ranked schools), the administration of the school
gives need-based scholarships even to undergraduates.
Of course, you have to first be admitted to that
school. One reason that this is possible is because
the top-ranked schools are almost always very well-
funded. Their primary concern is to get the best
students, regardless of whether they were anak orang
kaya or not.
In general, this type of scholarship for *undergrads*
is very rare. I have no idea if school XXX or YYY
has this type of scholarship, sorry.
For *graduate students*, many departments in the top
schools will not admit students unless the department
is going to give some sort of scholarship anyway.
This is true at MIT for most of engineering and
sciences. This is also true at UC Berkeley for most
of engineering and sciences. Having an external
funding source helps, of course. Most of the top
business schools offer loans to their students.
I'm sure that schools other than the three that I
mentioned also have some sort of need-based
scholarship. I do not know any specifics, sorry.
Your best bet is to ask the international student
office for that school. For example, if you do not
believe me, you can call the MIT international
students office and ask them yourself. Or better yet,
ask the students who were recipients of this
scholarship, they are listed on the website that I
posted.
Finally, I want to encourage all potential applicants
to be *proactive* in your search. Call the admissions
office of the schools that you are interested in. It
may be that some of them will be rude, but who cares?
Chances are, they won't remember you anyway. But when
they give you some advice, it's the best advice you
can get because it's straight from the people who may
decide whether you can go to that school or not.
The same goes with credentials. On a few occasions,
I have indirectly encountered people who claim to have
a PhD from MIT or Masters from Harvard, who turn out
to be false. You can simply call the registrars office
at MIT or Harvard to check. Invest in that phone call
(or two).
