The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology conducts fundamental research
focusing on climate related problems. The institute is situated in an
attractive downtown area of Hamburg, Germany, and provides a highly
stimulating international scientific environment. We are seeking
applicants for

1 PhD Position in Earth System Research (reference P32)

Within the interdisciplinary project HOBIMED in tight cooperation with
oceanographers, geologists and geochemists a coupled
physical-biogeochemical model of the ocean will be applied to the
Mediterranean Sea. The goal is to understand how the strong climatic
variations in the Eastern Mediterranean during the last 12,000 years
have led to the dramatic oxygen depletion events deduced from marine
sediment cores. Good programming skills (especially FORTRAN90), an
interest in marine biogeochemistry and a diploma/master degree in a
related field are required.

The research will be part of the Program INTERDYNAMIK funded by the

seek a Ph.D candidate in the field of earthquake source seismology for the
subject:

Oceanic Microseisms and Microearthquakes (OMM)

Host institution and PhD defense will be at Potsdam.

The project is part of a DFG research bundle in array seismology and is
funded for three years as a full PhD position (TV-L E13-Ost). Strong
cooperation between Hamburg and Potsdam and with partners of the bundle is
foreseen.

General goal is to improve the knowledge regarding point-like
quasi-continuous oceanic sources and on weak seismicity along mid-oceanic
ridges with a focus to the North and South Atlantic. The project aims to
develop and improve new approaches for source inversion of events.
Seismological three component arrays and conventional data are used and full
waveform and migration techniques are combined. Continuous data will be
searched to detect point-like sources, for instance earthquakes, submarine
vulcanic eruptions or oceanic microseisms.

We expect strong motivated candidates with a diploma or MSc. in geophysics,
physics, mathematics or similar field and expertise in scientific data
analysis. Practical skills in software development (C/C++, Unix/Linux) is a
plus. The application should include a full CV, names of two referees and a
general statement on the career plans and motivation of the candidate. The
position is open until filled.
