[beasiswa] [info] UNSW@ADFA- POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

UNSW@ADFA- POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP
Spectroscopy of samarium (III) activated X-ray storage phosphors.

Applications are invited for the above scholarship. The storage
mechanism will be investigated by laser techniques such as spectral
hole-burning and fluorescence line narrowing. A full understanding of
the mechanism may enable the design of other samarium(III) activated
materials with even higher storage efficiencies.

Notwithstanding the fact that X-rays are of greatest significance in
medical diagnostics, it is well documented that their application can
cause cancer. Hence there is a significant global effort to develop
techniques that allow a substantial reduction of the X-ray dose. The
samarium(III) based phosphors are potential candidates for this
important pursuit.

In addition to the laser selective experiments it is also planned to
engage conventional techniques such as fluorescence, reflection, Raman
and EPR spectroscopy. The PhD student will gain a wide range of
experience in the field of electronic spectroscopy of rare earth ions
in the solid state, laser spectroscopy and materials science. The
student will be involved in the development of a storage phosphor that
may possibly find applications in medical and scientific imaging.

• The Postgraduate Student will be enrolled for a PhD degree at the
ADFA campus of The University of New South Wales in Canberra.
• The scholarship is at the same rate as an APA with an additional
allowance of $1200. It is available for 3 years subject to
satisfactory performance.
• Applicants should have a first class honours degree, or equivalent,
in Physical Chemistry or Inorganic Chemistry or a related subject.
• People from EEO groups are encouraged to apply.
• The position is available immediately.
• To apply, please send a copy of your CV and academic record with a
covering letter of application to Ms Dianne Ferguson, Executive
Officer, School of PEMS, UNSW@ADFA (e-mail d.ferguson@adfa.edu.au).
Applicants should request two academic referees to send confidential
reports at the time of application.
