School Of Historical Studies - Northern Centre For The History Of Medicine
Applications are invited for this 3-year PhD studentship in the
History of Medicine, to be held in the School of Historical Studies at
Newcastle University. The studentship will cover tuition fees at
home/EU rate for three years and a stipend of £17,442 - £18,314 -
£19,230. It is funded by the Northern Centre for the History of
Medicine and will be available as of September 2008.
The successful applicant will work on a research project in the
History of Medicine under the supervision of scholars with established
international reputations in the field (see

He/she will join the postgraduate community based at the School of
Historical Studies at Newcastle University, which includes the subject
areas of Classics, History and Archaeology (see
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/historical/ ).
He/she will further benefit from the graduate activities developed
within the Northern Centre for the History of Medicine, a partnership
between the Universities of Newcastle and Durham supported by the
Wellcome Trust (see http://www.nchm.ac.uk or
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/niassh/hom/ ).
Eligibility: Applications for this studentship are invited from highly
motivated candidates holding, or being about to complete, a Masters
degree (or equivalent) with a (likely) degree result of at least Merit
(or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Overseas applicants with
equivalent qualifications are also strongly encouraged to apply.
Application procedure: In order to be considered for this competition,
applicants must first have secured a place in one of the School's PhD
programmes (History, Classics or Archaeology) by completing and
submitting the University's online application form (see
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/ ). Once this is the case,
applicants are asked to send: i) a full CV; ii) a personal statement
and letter of application outlining reasons for wanting to pursue
doctoral study in the history of medicine at Newcastle and
highlighting specific research interests (max 600 words), and iii)
references from two academic referees. Applications should be sent to

arrive no later than 14 April 2008.
