engines Combustion
and Harmful Emission Control Research Centre Department of Chemical
Engineering
A 3 year PhD position on the above mentioned topic is open at the CHEC
(Combustion and Harmful Emission Control) Research Centre, Department of
Chemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark.
*Supervisors: *Professor Kim Dam-Johansen (kdj@kt.dtu.dk), Associate
Professor Peter Arendt Jensen (paj@kt.dtu.dk), Professor Anker Jensen (
aj@kt.dtu.dk).
*Background:
*To reduce the dependence on fossil oil, and reduce the net emissions of
greenhouse gases, biofuels such as ethanol and bio-diesel may be used as
transportation fuel. The full environmental influence of an increased
utilization of bio transportation fuels is presently not known. A PhD
project will therefore be initiated to investigate the influence of using
bio-diesel or other liquid bio-fuels on gaseous and particulate emissions
from diesel engines.
The objective of this PhD study is to quantify the influence of bio-diesel
and diesel blends on the emission of particulates, hydrocarbons and NOx from
engines, and thereby obtain improved knowledge on the particulate formation
process as well as study the influence of the bio-diesel on catalytic
filters. The project will be conducted in collaboration with other Danish
research institutions.
*Project content:
*The study shall include experimental quantification of particulate
formation and reduction in an engine, in the exhaust system and in a
catalytic filter, as well as development of a model of the particulate
reduction process. The experimental work may include some of the following
tasks: Commissioning of test rig and measuring equipment, study of the
influence of fuel properties and engine operation parameters on emissions,
study of deactivation of the catalytic filters and supplement of engine test
bench measurements with lab reactor experiments on the catalytic oxidation
of hydrocarbons.
*Contents of PhD application:
*Candidates should hold a master degree in chemical engineering, or a
similar degree with an equivalent academic level. Applications must include
Curriculum Vitae, a statement on your motivation for applying,
recommendations, and copies of all grade lists and other relevant diplomas.
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for
PhD degree students at the Technical University of Denmark:
