Maastricht University, the youngest university in the Netherlands, is renowned for its unique, innovative, problem-based learning system, which is characterized by a small-scale and student-oriented approach. The university hosts 6 faculties: Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Faculty of law, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Psychology.
The Institute for Globalisation and International Regulation (IGIR) is an interdisciplinary institute at Maastricht University which has as its focus the regulatory processes and instruments used to manage the dynamic interaction between economic globalisation and core societal values.
The Faculty of Law of Maastricht University is offering:
Two Ph.D. positions in the field of International Economic Law
The Ph.D. projects will be carried out in the framework of the Institute for Globalisation and International Regulation
One Ph.D. project concerns the tension between private-sector standards reflecting consumer concerns and developing country market access under WTO law. (Vacancy Notice AT2007.210)
One Ph.D. project concerns the conflict between the liberalization of trade in services and the protection of core societal values under the General Agreement on Trade in Services. (Vacancy Notice AT2007.209)
Tasks
To engage in supervised scientific research that will ultimately result in a doctoral thesis (85%); and
To lecture on subjects in the Faculty's curriculum (15%).
Requirements
Qualified jurist with excellent knowledge of international economic law; an advanced degree in this field is a definite advantage; and
Enthusiastic and determined researcher with first-rate analytical and writing skills; and
Fluency in English.
Appointment
The appointment will be full time, for a period of four years and should lead to a Ph.D. thesis. The appointments will commence on 1 September 2008. The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with University regulations for academic personnel, and will range from € 1.956,- in the first year up to a maximum of € 2.502,- in the last year.

Candidates must submit a written application before 15 January 2008, accompanied by a detailed CV, an academic transcript indicating grades obtained, a letter of motivation and the contact details of three referees, at least two of whom are familiar with the candidate's academic abilities. Candidates should indicate (and motivate) their preference for one of two topics identified above.
